495 Express Lanes Extension Remains on Schedule to Open Saturday Morning Nov. 22; Closures & Detours Necessary this Friday Night into Saturday Morning

Drivers should expect new travel pattern and use extra caution

FAIRFAX, VA - The 495 Express Lanes Extension (the Extension) remains on schedule to open this Saturday, Nov. 22, weather permitting. The two-and-a-half-mile extension of new 495 Express Lanes spanning from near the Dulles Corridor Interchange to just before the American Legion Bridge and new connecting ramps are scheduled to be fully open and operational by mid-morning Saturday.

Lane Closures On North- and Southbound I-495 and Westbound Route 267 in Tysons-McLean Area During Daytime Hours This Weekend Nov. 15-16

Drivers should choose alternative routes due to expected potential backups and delays; Multi-lane closures and ramp closures with detours continue nightly through November

FAIRFAX, VA - A single lane will be closed in both directions on I-495 (Capital Beltway Outer and Inner Loops) in the Tysons-McLean area between the Dulles Corridor Interchange and American Legion Memorial Bridge this Saturday, Nov. 15 and Sunday, Nov. 16, between the hours of 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. Also on Saturday, Nov. 15, a single left lane will be closed on westbound Dulles Toll Road (Route 267) between Route 123 and the I-495 interchange between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. These extended daytime closures are needed for crews to complete paving and pavement marking activities, install flexible delineator posts, and finish other necessary work before the new express lanes open.

New 495 Express Lanes Extension Scheduled to Open Saturday, Nov. 22

Express Lanes portion of 495 NEXT project on track to open ahead of schedule and before the Thanksgiving holiday

MCLEAN, VA - The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Transurban, the Commonwealth’s private partner and operator of the 495 Express Lanes, confirmed today that the northern extension of the 495 Express Lanes is on track to open on Saturday, Nov. 22 – ahead of the design-build contract schedule and the upcoming Thanksgiving travel period – pending no weather delays or unforeseen circumstances.

Northbound 495 Express Lanes Closure and Single Lane Closure on Northbound I-495 General-Purpose Lanes Planned Saturday, Nov. 1; Nightly Lane and Ramp Closures on I-495 to Continue Through Mid-November

Drivers should expect potential backups and delays, and choose alternate routes

FAIRFAX, VA - The northbound 495 Express Lanes are scheduled to be closed between Route 7/Leesburg Pike and north of the Dulles Corridor Interchange, where the existing express lanes end, this Saturday, Nov. 1, from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. for paving work as part of the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project. Additionally, a single lane closure will be in place on northbound I-495 general-purpose lanes between Lewinsville Road and Old Dominion Drive this Saturday from 7 p.m. to 1 p.m. Following this work, multi-lane and ramp closures will occur nightly on I-495 in the north- and southbound directions through mid-November. These closures are needed for crews to continue paving activities for the project.

New 495 Express Lanes Extension To Open in Late November

Extended express lanes to provide new travel options and connectivity on I-495 in Virginia

MCLEAN, VA - The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Transurban, the Commonwealth’s private partner and operator of the 495 Express Lanes, announced today that the northern extension of the 495 Express Lanes is scheduled to open in late November, ahead of holiday travel. The extension includes two new express lanes in each direction of I-495 (the Capital Beltway) between the Dulles Corridor Interchange and the George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) Interchange, as well as new express lanes access at both interchanges. This extension will provide more capacity, new connections with major commuter and business routes, and new travel options for people who face daily gridlock and congestion in this section of the Beltway.

VDOT and Transurban launch safety campaign as crews work to open 495 Express Lanes by year-end

Drivers reminded to use caution and stay alert when traveling through the 495 NEXT project work zone in Tysons-McLean area

FAIRFAX - With construction activities on the new express lanes increasing and now concentrated in the median along the project corridor, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and its 495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project partner, Transurban, have launched a driver safety campaign. The awareness campaign emphasizes to drivers that active roadway construction and hundreds of workers are directly adjacent to Beltway traffic. The “Closer Than You Think” campaign will leverage ads that will run on radio, as well as various social media platforms, throughout September and into October as “back to work and school” traffic resumes and drivers adjust to post-summer travel patterns.
