Georgetown Pike Travel Lanes Shifted to New Northern Portion of Bridge

All lanes on the Georgetown Pike Bridge over I-495 in McLean were shifted to a new northern portion of the bridge over the weekend of August 23-26. The work was completed, and all lanes on the Georgetown Pike Bridge and ramps connecting to I-495 were reopened ahead of schedule on Sunday afternoon, August 25. The 495 NEXT project team thanks motorists for their help by adjusting travel plans and “staying away” during the weekend-long operation.

Prior to the weekend traffic shift, a new turn lane/ramp from westbound Georgetown Pike to northbound I-495 was opened to traffic. This lane/ramp is providing drivers more gradual and smoother access in this busy interchange area.

What Happens Next

In early-to-mid September, crews will begin demolishing the existing southern portion of Georgetown Pike Bridge. Following this demolition, crews will construct a new southern portion of the bridge, which is expected to open in mid-2025. Once the new southern portion of the bridge is built, crews will implement another traffic shift to put traffic into its final configuration on the completed, final bridge. The overall new Georgetown Pike Bridge is expected to open in late 2025.
