Work crews to perform overhead sign repairs

MCLEAN, VA - Triple lane closures are planned on southbound I-495 (Beltway Outer Loop) between Georgetown Pike (Exit 44) and Old Dominion Drive in McLean from 11 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, April 22 until as late as 5 a.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, April 23, for overhead sign repair work. One southbound lane will remain open in this area of the Beltway, except when intermittent traffic stoppages of up to 30-minutes each, occur between Midnight and 5 a.m. Beltway drivers traveling from Maryland to Virginia over the American Legion Bridge should expect delays and use alternate routes.

MCLEAN, VA - Motorists are advised there will be continued ramp closures and detours during overnight hours this week at the exit ramp from the southbound I-495 (Capital Beltway Outer Loop) collector road to Georgetown Pike (Exit 44), and the on-ramp from northwest George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) to southbound I-495. New configuration to improve merging on and off the Beltway in this area

FAIRFAX, VA - The ramp from northwest George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) to southbound I-495 and Georgetown Pike (Exit 44) is now scheduled to be shifted into a new ramp alignment between 9:30 p.m. Thursday, April 17 and 5 a.m. Friday, April 18. The new ramp alignment, which is planned to be in effect Friday morning, runs parallel to southbound I-495 between the GWMP and Georgetown Pike and will improve merging for drivers entering and exiting the Beltway in this area. The new configuration will also accommodate the wider Beltway that is needed for the 495 Express Lanes Northern Extension.

Work to implement traffic shift to occur Thursday night, April 10 until early morning Friday, April 11

UPDATE (April 10, 2025): The below ramp shift and associated traffic impacts have been postponed. This work will now occur on Wednesday night, April 16, until early morning Thursday, April 17.

FAIRFAX, VA - The collector ramp from northwest George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) to southbound I-495 and Georgetown Pike (Exit 44) is scheduled to be shifted into a new ramp alignment between 9:30 p.m. Thursday, April 10 and 5 a.m. Friday, April 11. The new ramp alignment runs parallel to southbound I-495 between the GWMP and Georgetown Pike and will improve merging for drivers entering and exiting the Beltway in this area. Closures needed for overnight demolition of Old Dominion Drive bridge

FAIRFAX, VA - Lane closures and intermittent traffic stoppages are scheduled to occur during overnight hours tonight, Thursday, Feb. 20, through Saturday, March 15, weather permitting, on north- and southbound I-495 (Capital Beltway) between Lewinsville Road and Georgetown Pike in McLean. These closures and traffic stoppages are needed for crews to safely demolish the retired Old Dominion Drive bridge over I-495. This demolition follows the recent shifting of traffic onto the new Old Dominion Drive bridge, which was built as part of the 495 NEXT project.

495 NEXT Crews Performing Work for Overhead Signage and Setting Barriers and Attenuators

FAIRFAX, VA - There will be daytime single lane and mobile shoulder closures and nighttime single lane closures on north- and southbound I-495 (Capital Beltway) in Maryland between Cabin John Parkway and the American Legion Bridge beginning Monday, Feb. 17, through Sunday, Feb. 23. These closures are needed for Virginia’s 495 NEXT crews to install temporary signs and barrier, and conduct preparatory work for overhead sign structures, along this section of I-495 in Maryland.

Weekend-long travel impacts on Beltway near Tysons and at I-495/Dulles Corridor interchange; motorists urged to plan ahead and stay away

FAIRFAX, VA - Crews are preparing to install five lines of massive steel girders extending 295-feet in length across northbound I-495 (Capital Beltway) for a new express lanes ramp that will connect the Dulles Toll Road to northbound I-495. This major bridge girder operation - the Big Beam Weekend - is scheduled to occur Friday night, January 24 through early Monday morning, January 27, and will impact travel significantly on northbound I-495 near Tysons and at the I-495 and Dulles Corridor interchange area. Motorists are urged to STAY AWAY throughout the weekend as northbound I-495 will be reduced from six to two lanes near Tysons, and multiple ramps at the I-495 and Dulles Corridor interchange will be closed and detoured. In the event of inclement weather, the Big Beam Weekend will be rescheduled for the following weekend, Jan. 31 through Feb. 3.

FAIRFAX, VA - During overnight hours starting Monday night, July 22 and continuing nightly for an estimated week, eastbound Dulles Toll Road and eastbound Dulles Access Road toward I-495 will be closed just east of the Route 7 interchange to allow crews to install bridge girders for a new overpass from eastbound Dulles Toll Road to northbound 495 Express Lanes. Similar closures are planned nightly July 25 and 26, for girder lifts over the westbound Dulles Access Road. FAIRFAX, VA - Starting tonight at 8 p.m., and continuing for approximately 48 hours through the weekend, the right lane of the southbound I-495 collector-distributor road between George Washington Memorial Parkway (exit 43) and Georgetown Pike (exit 44) will be closed so crews can build a temporary ramp as part of the 495 NEXT Project. The left lane of the collector-distributor road, including the entry point (from George Washington Memorial Parkway to the southbound I-495 collector-distributor road), and both exits (exit 43 and 44) will remain open. The closure will be continuous from 8 p.m. Friday, October 20 to 8 p.m. Sunday, October 22. The lane closure primarily will affect motorists traveling on southbound I-495 exiting at Georgetown Pike.

Funding approved to conduct environmental analysis of project to relieve major traffic choke-point

RICHMOND - Virginia's Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) approved funding in the amount of $6 million Wednesday for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to conduct an environmental study of a plan to extend the I-495 Express Lanes by approximately three miles from the I-495 and Dulles Toll Road interchange to the vicinity of the American Legion Bridge and Maryland line. This northern extension to the 495 Express Lanes would help relieve a traffic-choked section of I-495 by providing more capacity, new travel choices and benefits for carpoolers.
