Crews installing bridge girders, inspecting pavement and performing overhead sign work throughout 495 NEXT project corridor

FAIRFAX, VA - During overnight hours starting on or about Monday, Aug. 19, and continuing nightly through early September, there will be multi-lane closures and periodic total traffic stoppages affecting I-495 North and South between George Washington Memorial Parkway (Exit 43) and the Dulles Corridor Interchange (near MM 45.2). The work is part of the 495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project.

Motorists asked to follow signed detour across American Legion Bridge to loop back into Virginia

FAIRFAX, VA - The on-ramp from westbound George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) to southbound I-495 is scheduled to close beginning at 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16 to 4 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 17 for bridge deck repair work. A signed detour will be in place directing motorists across the American Legion Bridge into Maryland, to the Clara Barton Parkway (Exit 41), and then back toward Virginia.

Major traffic impacts; VDOT encouraging travelers to avoid area

FAIRFAX - All travel lanes on the Georgetown Pike Bridge over I-495 in McLean are scheduled to be shifted to a new northern portion of the bridge over the weekend of Aug. 23-26. Drivers are advised to avoid the Georgetown Pike and I-495 interchange area all weekend, as lanes will be reduced on Georgetown Pike and I-495 (Capital Beltway) ramps will be closed with detours in place. These closures are necessary for crews to complete paving, lane markings, ramp tie-ins and other work to implement the shift. This work previously was scheduled to occur the weekend of Aug. 16-19 but was rescheduled to Aug. 23-26, due to weather conditions last week impacting advance preparatory work.
