Multi-lane closures and stoppages on Beltway and ramp closures/detours will be in place to implement traffic shift between Georgetown Pike and Lewinsville Road

UPDATE, July 17, 2025: The traffic shift on southbound I-495 between Georgetown Pike and Lewinsville Road scheduled for July 18 has been postponed, and work will be rescheduled to overnight hours early next week.

McLean, VA - On or about this Friday night, July 18, crews plan to implement the second of two traffic shifts of all four lanes on southbound I-495 (Beltway Outer Loop) within the I-495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project area. This second phase will shift southbound I-495 lanes from Georgetown Pike to midway between Old Dominion Drive and Lewinsville Road onto newly constructed lanes on the outer section of the highway. Work will begin Friday night, with all southbound lanes in this section of the Beltway reopened in their new alignment by 10 a.m. Saturday morning, July 19. Saturday and Sunday nights will serve as backup dates in case of inclement weather or other work delays.

Various daytime and nighttime traffic impacts anticipated; Motorists should plan extra travel time and follow posted detours

FAIRFAX, VA - Throughout the remainder of July, crews on the 495 NEXT project will continue construction activities at the I-495 and Dulles Corridor Interchange, as part of the I-495 Northern Extension Express Lanes (495 NEXT) project. This work will require daytime and nighttime single and multi-lane closures and ramp closures with detours. Weather permitting, work will occur Mondays through Fridays through August 1, unless otherwise noted.

Motorists traveling on northbound GW Parkway are asked to follow signed detour across American Legion Bridge to loop back into Virginia

FAIRFAX, VA - The on-ramp from northbound George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP) to southbound I-495 (Capital Beltway Outer Loop) and the slip-ramp from GWMP to Georgetown Pike are scheduled to be closed on Thursday night, July 10, and Friday night, July 11. Closures and detours will occur nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next morning for 495 NEXT crews to install new noise wall panels and conduct trenching work. Saturday night, July 12, and Monday night, July 14, will serve as backup dates in case of inclement weather or other delays.
