Multi-Lane Closures and Ramp Closures/Detours Planned this Weekend Affecting Northbound I-495 in Tysons-McLean

Closures begin Friday night, Sept. 12 through Sunday morning, Sept. 14; Drivers urged to stay away to avoid potential backups and delays

FAIRFAX, VA - Beginning on or about Friday night, Sept. 12 at 9 p.m. and continuing until approximately 9 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 14, lane and ramp closures will be in place on northbound I-495 (Capital Beltway Inner Loop) between Leesburg Pike (Route 7) and the George Washington Memorial Parkway (GWMP). Triple lane closures and ramp closures with detours will occur on Friday and Saturday nights, and a single lane closure is planned to be in place all day on Saturday. These closures are necessary for 495 NEXT crews to shift the general purpose lanes on northbound I-495 into their final alignment for the project and reopen right-hand shoulders through much of the corridor, and to reopen the ramp from northbound I-495 to westbound Dulles Toll Road (DTR) (Exit 45) at its permanent location, which is about one-third of a mile north of the existing temporary exit that has been in use since project construction began. In the event of inclement weather or other delays, this work and required lane and ramp closures will be rescheduled for the following weekend, Friday night, Sept. 19 through Sunday morning, Sept. 21.

VDOT and Transurban Launch Safety Campaign as Crews Work to Open 495 Express Lanes by Year-End

Drivers reminded to use caution and stay alert when traveling through the 495 NEXT project work zone in Tysons-McLean area

FAIRFAX, VA - With construction activities on the new express lanes increasing and now concentrated in the median along the project corridor, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and its 495 Express Lanes Northern Extension (495 NEXT) project partner, Transurban, have launched a driver safety campaign. The awareness campaign emphasizes to drivers that active roadway construction and hundreds of workers are directly adjacent to Beltway traffic. The “Closer Than You Think” campaign will leverage ads that will run on radio, as well as various social media platforms, throughout September and into October as “back to work and school” traffic resumes and drivers adjust to post-summer travel patterns.
